Palm Springs Spider Sculpture to Stay After Building Demolition

The future of the iconic Palm Springs Spider sculpture is bringing relief to local residents following the recent demolition of the abandoned “Hole in the Wall” welding shop.
Last week, bulldozers tore down the longtime structure, prompting widespread speculation on social media about the fate of the massive spider sculpture that had stood outside for decades. The 28-foot-tall artwork, created from a Volkswagen Beetle mounted on steel spider legs, has become a recognizable roadside landmark in the area.
The sculpture was built by former property owner Bob Miner and his friend, welder Rick Grissom. Grissom recently reflected on the monument’s popularity, saying visitors from around the world regularly stopped to take photos.
“We had people from all over the world,” Grissom said. “Once the spider was built, we’d see tour buses and people stopping just to take pictures. It’s been there over 30 years, so it’s worth saving.”
According to officials, the current property owner instructed the demolition crew not to damage the sculpture during the teardown. As a result, the spider remains standing despite the removal of the surrounding building.
With potential developments such as warehouses or travel centers being considered for the site, the sculpture may continue to welcome visitors entering Palm Springs.
