Amazon Announces Another Round of Job Cuts as Company Restructures and Closes Some Stores
Amazon is making another round of job cuts as it continues efforts to restructure its massive global operation.
The company announced it is eliminating additional positions across the organization, adding to previous workforce reductions. Amazon reported having more than one million employees worldwide in a company filing last year.
While artificial intelligence was not specifically mentioned in the latest note to employees, the layoffs come as workers across the country brace for the growing impact of AI in an already sluggish labor market.
Amazon previously cut jobs in October, primarily affecting corporate-level roles.
Alongside the workforce reductions, Amazon also confirmed plans to close some of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores. The company says select locations will be converted into Whole Foods Market stores as part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and refocus its retail footprint.
The tech and retail giant has been working to reshape its business following rapid expansion during the pandemic era. Company leaders say the changes are aimed at improving efficiency while adapting to shifting consumer habits and economic pressures.
Amazon has not released specific numbers tied to this latest round of layoffs.
