Author Steve Hochman Shares Journey From Homelessness to Fitness Success Through “The Three”

Steve Hochman is sharing an inspiring story of resilience, health, and transformation — a journey that took him from living out of his car to cofounding a major fitness bootcamp franchise and becoming a bestselling author.

Hochman joined NBC Palm Springs to talk about his book, The Three, which introduces a science-based approach to nutrition focused on understanding the glycemic index rather than simply counting calories.

He explained that many popular diets fail because they focus only on calories, ignoring how certain foods impact blood sugar and insulin levels. Foods with a high glycemic index can spike glucose, triggering insulin release and encouraging fat storage. By choosing foods that keep blood sugar stable, Hochman says it becomes far easier to maintain a healthy weight — even while enjoying foods like pizza, cake, and ice cream when prepared correctly.

Hochman also shared how following The Three can dramatically boost confidence by removing the stress of restrictive dieting. Instead of calorie counting or tracking macros, his approach centers on simple ingredient awareness, helping people feel empowered and in control of their health.

His personal journey began in high school, where he balanced football with homelessness. Through determination, he earned a college scholarship but later struggled with weight and high blood pressure. A former classmate who became a scientist introduced him to the glycemic index, sparking a turning point that transformed his health and outlook.

Today, Hochman says his mission is to help others achieve lasting wellness through education and practical tools, emphasizing that confidence grows when people feel aligned with their healthiest selves.
