Coachella Valley Students Spread Positivity During Great Kindness Challenge at Valley View Elementary
Students across Coachella Valley Unified School District are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge, a weeklong national program focused on encouraging compassion, positivity, and connection.
NBC Palm Springs’ Thalia Hayden stopped by Valley View Elementary School in Coachella, where kindness was front and center. From handmade crowns celebrating good behavior to daily inspirational messages posted by teachers, students were encouraged to reflect on what it means to treat others with respect.
Teachers shared that every student in the school took part in a kindness pledge, committing to simple acts like offering compliments, helping classmates, and spreading positivity. Daily affirmations allowed students to pick messages that resonated with them, reinforcing the idea that kindness starts with small choices.
Students also expressed themselves through art, creating drawings and chalk messages centered on love and compassion. Educators say these creative projects help children understand that kindness isn’t just taught — it’s practiced.
Several students shared thoughtful perspectives, explaining that being kind means smiling, respecting others, and treating people the way they want to be treated. Others said they hope the challenge inspires friendships, especially among those who may not always get along.
Teachers emphasized that programs like the Great Kindness Challenge are especially important in today’s world, helping students navigate negativity while learning empathy and care for others.
The weeklong effort aims to empower students to carry these lessons beyond the classroom and into their everyday lives.
