Palm Desert Hosts International Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration Honoring Auschwitz Liberation

Palm Desert marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day this morning with a moving community commemoration hosted by the Mensch International Foundation.

The foundation’s 17th annual event is taking place at the Civic Center Park Amphitheater, where hundreds are expected to fill the lawn in remembrance of the liberation of Auschwitz and the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust. Footage captured earlier showed attendees arriving and taking their seats as the ceremony got underway.

Students from schools across the Coachella Valley are participating alongside invited speakers, including the ambassadors of Hungary and Denmark. The program focuses on honoring survivors, remembering victims, and reinforcing the importance of Holocaust education and tolerance.

Stephen Geiger, founder and executive director of the Mensch International Foundation, spoke with NBC Palm Springs earlier this week about the significance of today’s gathering. Geiger is the son of a Holocaust survivor and has dedicated his life’s work to promoting education, remembrance, and compassion through the foundation’s outreach programs.

Organizers say the annual commemoration serves not only as a tribute to history, but also as a call to action for younger generations to stand against hatred and discrimination.

NBC Palm Springs will continue coverage of the event, with additional highlights and remarks from today’s speakers airing during the afternoon and evening newscasts.
