After attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar, Trump fuels conspiracy theories as suspect faces assault charges
President Donald Trump drew criticism this week after responding to an assault on Rep. Ilhan Omar by suggesting — without evidence — that the Minnesota lawmaker was responsible for the attack herself.
Omar was sprayed with a substance during a town hall event in Minneapolis when a man rushed the podium. Minneapolis police arrested 35-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak in connection with alleged third-degree assault. Authorities believe the liquid used was apple cider vinegar, and federal officials say U.S. Capitol Police are pursuing possible federal charges.
Despite the arrest, Trump told reporters he had not seen the video of the incident and added that Omar “probably had herself sprayed,” echoing conspiracy theories that quickly spread on pro-Trump social media accounts.
Law enforcement officials say Kazmierczak had previously posted anti-Omar content and photos of Trump online. He also allegedly texted a neighbor before the event, suggesting he might be arrested. Capitol Police said in a statement that assaulting a member of Congress is unacceptable and vowed to seek the most serious charges possible.
CNN reports this is not the first time Trump has responded to politically motivated violence by casting blame on the victims. He has previously made similar claims following the January 6 Capitol attack, the 2022 assault on Paul Pelosi, and other high-profile incidents involving political figures and activists.
In Omar’s case, there has been no evidence to support Trump’s suggestion that the attack was staged. Officials emphasized that the suspect acted alone and that the investigation is ongoing.
Capitol Police thanked on-site security and local law enforcement for their swift response, saying they are working with federal partners to ensure accountability.
The incident has renewed concerns over political violence and rhetoric, as officials urge calm while investigators move forward with criminal proceedings.
