Coachella Valley Schools Prepare for Possible Student Walkouts Over ICE Protests
School districts across the Coachella Valley are preparing for the possibility of student walkouts following the circulation of flyers encouraging high school students to join a national protest against recent immigration enforcement actions. Notices have been sent to parents alerting them to potential demonstrations and reminding families about campus safety procedures.
Desert Sands Unified School District is among three local districts that addressed the issue this week, as organizers call for a nationwide day of protest that could include student walkouts and business closures. The demonstrations are aimed at opposing federal immigration enforcement policies and raising awareness about their impact on local communities.
The planned protests have drawn attention from local leaders. Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz said he supports individuals’ rights to exercise free speech and peaceful protest, noting that many residents are expressing concern over recent enforcement actions. Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez also released a statement backing students’ right to nonviolent demonstrations if walkouts take place.
School officials say their focus remains on maintaining a safe and orderly environment for students, regardless of participation. NBC Palm Springs plans to continue monitoring any walkouts or demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow and will provide coverage across its platforms.
