New Non-Surgical Knee Treatment Offers Relief for Osteoarthritis Patients in Coachella Valley

Millions of Americans suffer from knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, a condition that becomes increasingly common with age. Now, patients in the Coachella Valley have access to a new, minimally invasive treatment that aims to reduce pain and inflammation without the need for traditional surgery.

The procedure, known as genicular artery embolization, or GAE, has been performed for several years but is gaining attention locally as an outpatient option with faster recovery times. Unlike knee replacement surgery, which can require weeks or months of rehabilitation, specialists say most patients who undergo GAE can return home the same day and resume normal activities within 24 hours.

During the procedure, doctors insert a small catheter and deliver microscopic particles to block abnormal blood vessels that contribute to chronic inflammation in the knee. The treatment is performed under light, or “twilight,” anesthesia and typically takes less than an hour.

Medical professionals note that knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the United States, with studies showing many adults over 60 display signs of the condition on X-rays. Risk factors include age, weight, prior injuries, and family history.

While GAE does not replace all traditional treatments, local specialists say it can significantly improve quality of life for patients seeking a less invasive alternative. Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, cover the procedure, making it more accessible for those in need.
