Palm Desert Cosmetology Students Give Back, Helping Phenixia Foundation Gala Guests Shine

Students from Elite Cosmetology School in Palm Desert are proving that beauty goes far beyond hair and makeup.

The school’s aspiring barbers, hairstylists, and makeup artists recently donated their time and skills to help prepare guests for an upcoming gala benefiting the Phenixia Foundation, a local nonprofit that supports children and adults with special needs and their families.

Educator Dak Hussey says giving back is a core part of their mission.

“We want to help build community relationships and give back to the community as much as humanly possible,” Hussey said.

The students worked alongside staff to get gala attendees looking and feeling their best, offering hairstyling and makeup services ahead of the big night. Organizers say the impact is immediate.

Renee Griffin, who is helping coordinate the event, described the transformation she sees every year.

“If you could see the faces of these individuals once they’ve had their hair and makeup done, they beam. They smile. They’re confident. They’re a whole new person,” Griffin said.

She calls the gala “like a prom on steroids,” noting it’s unlike any other dance or prom held in the desert.

The Phenixia Foundation Gala takes place Saturday, January 31, at Palm Valley Country Club. While the celebration itself lasts just one evening, organizers say the confidence gained — and the real-world experience for students — will last much longer.

For the future beauty professionals, it’s also a powerful lesson in compassion and community service.
