Local Dispensary Hosts Cannabis Education Event for Seniors Seeking Pain Relief

With studies showing an increase in cannabis use among older adults, education and guidance around marijuana products are becoming a growing focus in the Coachella Valley. The Leaf on El Paseo, a high-end cannabis dispensary in Palm Desert, is now teaming up with a wellness coach to host an event aimed specifically at helping seniors better understand their options.

Store staff say many of their customers are older adults seeking relief from chronic pain, inflammation, and sleep issues rather than recreational use. Some report turning to cannabis after traditional medications, including opioids, failed to provide adequate relief or caused unwanted side effects. Products like gummies and other low-dose options are often preferred for their ease of use and milder effects.

One of the event’s organizers, Sue Taylor — known as “Mama Sue” — is a former Catholic school principal who now advocates for cannabis education among seniors. She says marijuana helped ease her own pain and improve her quality of life, motivating her to help others feel more comfortable exploring alternatives.

The upcoming event will focus on responsible use, product education, and answering questions in a supportive setting. While medical experts caution that cannabis may not be appropriate for everyone, organizers say the goal is to provide clear information so seniors can make informed decisions about their health.

For many attendees, the effort represents a shift in mindset and a new option for managing pain and aging more comfortably.
