Palm Springs police warn of intersection donation scams after two arrests
The Palm Springs Police Department is warning residents about a growing scam targeting drivers at city intersections, after two people were taken into custody this week.
Police say scammers are using emotional stories and photos of children to persuade good-hearted people to donate money. One tactic becoming more common involves individuals holding signs with pictures and claiming they are collecting funds for funeral expenses.
On January 28, officers responded to reports of people walking into traffic near Ramone Road and San Luis Rey Drive in Palm Springs. According to police, the group claimed a child had died and they needed donations to cover burial costs.
After investigating, officers confirmed the child shown in the photos is alive. Two individuals from Redlands were arrested on charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and conspiracy.
Police say these scams are often organized and may involve stolen images pulled from the internet or real charities. They also pose a safety risk, especially when people step into roadways or stand on medians while approaching vehicles.
Authorities are urging residents to be cautious when approached for donations at intersections and to report suspicious activity. Anyone who sees similar situations in Palm Springs is encouraged to call the city’s non-emergency line so officers can check on the situation.
Our Caitlin Kelley has been following the story and shared details from Palm Springs Police about how these scams work and what residents can do to stay safe.
