Every Monday morning in Denver, Mel Faes heads out on his Meals on Wheels route — a tradition he’s kept for more than 40 years.

Faes, now 100 years old, is a World War II veteran who has spent decades delivering meals and companionship to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels. For many recipients, the visit means more than just food. It’s often the only friendly face they see all day.

Born in 1925 and raised in north Denver, Faes joined the Army Air Force at 19 before returning home to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years. After retiring, he began volunteering — and never stopped.

“You can donate money here and there,” Faes said. “But donating your time is more valuable.”

These days, Faes is joined on his route by his sons, John and Jim, who began helping about five years ago when their father stopped driving. While they handle transportation, Mel still insists on carrying meals to the door whenever possible.

“Sometimes you’re the only person they see all day,” Faes said.

The program is supported locally by Volunteers of America Colorado, which produces and delivers nearly 3,000 meals daily across seven counties. Organizers say volunteers like Faes provide both nourishment and human connection.

“It’s food for the body, but also for the soul,” said Cathy Law, a project manager with the organization’s retired and senior volunteer program.

Faes’ family says his lifelong commitment to helping others has been inspiring. His son John describes the experience as humbling and meaningful for everyone involved.

At 100, Faes shows no signs of slowing down. Asked his secret to a long life, his answer is simple: keep moving.

His dedication recently earned him recognition as a local everyday hero — though Faes says he doesn’t do it for the accolades.

“It’s not really work,” he said. “It’s something you love to do.”

Volunteers of America Colorado says there is always a need for additional Meals on Wheels volunteers to help serve seniors across the state.
