Clintons’ Last-Minute Offer Rejected as House Moves Toward Contempt Vote in Epstein Probe
Attorneys representing Bill and Hillary Clinton made a last-minute effort to avoid a House contempt of Congress vote related to the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, but their proposal was rejected by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer.
According to correspondence obtained by CNN, the Clintons’ legal team offered terms under which Bill Clinton would participate in a voluntary, transcribed interview in New York City, limited to the scope of the Epstein probe and capped at four hours. The proposal also included allowing both sides to have their own transcriber present. Hillary Clinton’s attorneys said she could either submit an additional sworn declaration or agree to a similar in-person interview.
In exchange, the attorneys asked Comer to withdraw the subpoenas and contempt resolutions against both Clintons.
Comer rejected the offer, calling it unreasonable and saying the committee could not shift from sworn depositions to voluntary interviews or accept limits on questioning. He also cited concerns that a time-restricted interview could allow Clinton to “run out the clock” without fully cooperating.
The chairman noted that the Clintons had already failed to appear for scheduled depositions and said the committee could not rely on voluntary cooperation at this stage. Comer also questioned the request for a separate transcriber, given that the committee would provide an official court reporter.
With the rejection of the proposal, the House is now expected to proceed with a final vote on contempt resolutions later this week.
The dispute stems from the Oversight Committee’s investigation into Epstein and efforts to obtain in-person testimony from both Clintons. Bill Clinton has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein.
Comer also referenced how a similar process unfolded with Hunter Biden, who ultimately agreed to an in-person deposition after a contempt vote advanced, underscoring the committee’s stance that sworn testimony is required.
