Homeland Security to Equip DHS Officers With Body Cameras in Minneapolis, Noem Says

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will immediately begin issuing body cameras to all federal officers working on the ground in Minneapolis, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Noem made the announcement Monday in a social media post, saying the move is effective right away and will expand nationwide as funding becomes available. She added that DHS plans to rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to law enforcement officers across the country.
The decision follows two deadly shootings involving immigration agents in Minneapolis, incidents that sparked public outrage and renewed calls for transparency and accountability in federal enforcement operations.
Noem said the goal of the body camera rollout is to increase openness and trust, calling it part of an effort to make the administration more transparent. While some federal agents already use body cameras in limited situations, this directive significantly broadens their use in Minneapolis.
The announcement also comes as Congress works through short-term funding measures for DHS. Lawmakers have been debating broader reforms tied to immigration enforcement, including oversight requirements and officer accountability.
Officials have not yet released details on how footage will be stored, who will have access to recordings, or how long video will be retained. DHS says additional guidance is expected as the program expands.
