Newsom Announces Major Fentanyl Bust as National Guard Expands Drug Interdiction Efforts in California

California officials announced a major milestone in the fight against fentanyl, revealing that more than 50.6 million pills and over 34,000 pounds of illicit drugs have now been seized statewide.

Speaking Monday in San Diego, Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted expanded interdiction efforts supported by the California National Guard, saying more than 300 Guard members are now actively working to disrupt transnational drug trafficking.

Newsom said the seizures represent an estimated street value of roughly $506 million — nearly half a billion dollars — calling it a significant step in California’s ongoing push to curb the flow of deadly drugs.

“These men and women are working proactively to focus on interdiction and develop a more rational approach to addressing the fentanyl crisis,” Newsom said. He added that unprecedented state funding is helping drive these operations, which target trafficking routes and distribution networks.

According to the governor, the effort has already resulted in 34,357 pounds of drugs seized since the expanded operations began, along with tens of millions of fentanyl pills removed from circulation.

State leaders say the deployment of National Guard personnel is part of a broader strategy to strengthen border enforcement, improve coordination with law enforcement agencies, and reduce overdose deaths tied to fentanyl.

Officials emphasized that the work is ongoing, with Guard members continuing to assist in intelligence gathering, interdiction, and logistical support as California confronts the fentanyl epidemic.
