Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow, Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Monday morning, declaring six more weeks of winter ahead.

The groundhog emerged for his 140th annual prediction in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, delivering his forecast in what handlers translate from "Groundhogese." A shadow sighting traditionally signals an extended winter, while no shadow means an early spring.

Phil has predicted longer winters far more often than early springs throughout his storied career. His accuracy, however, leaves something to be desired—he's correct less than 50% of the time. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Information ranked him 17th out of 19 prognosticating critters on their accuracy list.
