SNL’s “Mom Confession” Hits Home as New Polls Show Growing Unease Among Trump Voters

A recent “Mom Confession” sketch on Saturday Night Live struck a chord by portraying a mother who nervously admits she’s having second thoughts about President Donald Trump — and new polling data suggests the satire may reflect a real, if subtle, shift among parts of his voter base.

According to multiple recent surveys, support for Trump appears to be softening among some Republicans and 2024 Trump voters. A Pew Research Center poll found that 20 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents now say Trump’s administration has been worse than expected. Support for “all or most” of his policies also dropped notably over the past year.

Additional polling from Fox News and the New York Times-Siena College shows similar cracks. In the Fox survey, 16 percent of Trump voters said they disapproved of his overall job performance. When asked about specific issues, disapproval rose above 20 percent on most topics, with roughly one in four expressing dissatisfaction on several key areas.

The Times-Siena poll found about 12 percent of Trump voters disapproved of his performance, while 17 percent described his return to office as unsuccessful. Sixteen percent said it had been worse than expected, and a similar share reported negative emotions when asked how they felt about his first year back.

While outright “regret” remains relatively limited, past surveys suggest growing reservations beneath the surface. An earlier Washington Post-Ipsos poll showed 7 percent of Trump voters saying they regretted their vote, with higher levels among non-White voters. Other research has found declining confidence and increasing “mixed feelings,” even among those who still say they support him.

Analysts say this points to a pattern: voters may hesitate to openly disavow Trump, but deeper questioning reveals discomfort with specific policies and outcomes. Much like the mother in the SNL sketch, some appear to be reassessing their views quietly — and cautiously.

The data suggests disenchantment may be building slowly rather than erupting all at once. And just as the sketch implies, admitting second thoughts — especially in a polarized environment — doesn’t always come easily.
