Tour de Palm Springs Returns Saturday with Thousands of Cyclists Expected Across the Valley
Thousands of cyclists will take over streets across the Coachella Valley this Saturday, February 7th, for the 28th annual Tour de Palm Springs.
The event, one of the largest charity cycling rides in the country, draws up to 8,000 participants from 46 states and four countries each year. Routes range from short one- and three-mile walks to a 102-mile century ride, all starting in downtown Palm Springs and spanning the valley. This year's theme honors military members, first responders, and veterans.
Since launching in 1998, the Tour de Palm Springs has raised nearly $5 million for more than 150 local nonprofit organizations, supported by roughly 1,500 volunteers annually.
Former professional cyclist Frankie Andreu is this year's honorary guest. Andreu competed in nine Tour de France races during his 12-year career and represented the United States in the 1988 and 1996 Olympic Games.
Drivers should expect road and lane closures throughout the day. Build in extra time if traveling through the area on Saturday, and give cyclists plenty of space.
NBC Palm Springs will provide updates on specific closures as they're announced.
