Trump Cuts Tariffs on India After Modi Agrees to Shift Away From Russian Oil Imports

President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will sharply reduce tariffs on goods from India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to begin replacing Russian crude imports with oil from the United States and Venezuela.

The move comes after months of trade pressure, including steep tariffs imposed on Indian products as leverage to curb India’s reliance on Russia for energy. India currently imports roughly 1.5 million barrels of Russian oil each day, accounting for more than a third of its total crude supply.

Trump said the agreement followed a direct conversation with Modi, adding that India will also reduce tariffs on US goods to zero and remove certain non-tariff trade barriers. In exchange, the US will immediately lower tariffs on Indian imports to 18 percent, down from as high as 50 percent.

India has long defended its purchase of Russian oil as essential to its energy security. As the world’s third-largest oil consumer, the country relies heavily on affordable crude to fuel its fast-growing economy. Analysts note Russian oil has traded at a significant discount, making it difficult for India to walk away completely.

Energy experts also caution that replacing Russian oil will not happen overnight. Venezuela’s production infrastructure has deteriorated over decades, and even combined with US supply, it may take years and substantial investment to fully offset Russian imports.

Despite those challenges, economists say the deal could create new pressure on Russia’s economy over time while offering relief to Indian exporters affected by US tariffs. Trump also said India pledged to significantly increase investments in American energy, technology, agriculture, and coal, including a $500 billion commitment across multiple sectors.

While India is not among America’s largest trading partners, the United States imported more than $95 billion in goods from India in 2025, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, apparel, and chemicals. The tariff reduction could ease price pressures on some consumer products and strengthen commercial ties between the two countries.

Market reaction remained cautious, with oil prices showing limited movement as traders weighed whether the agreement would lead to meaningful changes in global supply.
