Lawmakers Hear Testimony on DHS Agent Encounters as Families Describe Violent Immigration Raids
Several people who say they were harmed during encounters with federal immigration agents are testifying Tuesday at a public forum on Capitol Hill, as Democratic lawmakers examine the Department of Homeland Security’s use of force during immigration operations.
The hearing, organized by Richard Blumenthal and Robert Garcia, features victims and family members describing what they say were aggressive and traumatic interactions with DHS agents. No DHS officials are expected to appear.
Among those represented are relatives of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minnesota woman who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer while sitting in her vehicle in January, shortly after dropping off her young son at school.
Lawmakers are also revisiting the killing of Alex Pretti, who died days later in Minneapolis after being shot by federal officers. Both deaths sparked protests and renewed scrutiny of DHS enforcement tactics in the Twin Cities.
CNN reports that additional testimony will include accounts from individuals who say masked agents emerged from unmarked vehicles, surrounded their cars with weapons drawn, smashed windows, and fired shots as families attempted to flee in fear. In another case, charges against a woman accused of ramming a federal vehicle were later dismissed by a judge, citing concerns over how the investigation was handled.
One woman told CNN she became confused by shouted commands during an encounter, saying her autism and auditory challenges made the situation overwhelming. DHS later referred to her as an agitator in a public statement.
The forum comes amid growing national backlash over immigration enforcement practices under President Donald Trump’s administration, including the use of armed, masked agents and an increase in raids and protests across multiple cities.
Lawmakers say the goal of Tuesday’s testimony is to give victims and families a platform to share their experiences and to push for greater accountability and transparency from federal agencies.
