Roger Goodell Walks a Tightrope as Bad Bunny and Green Day Headline Super Bowl LX
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is hoping Super Bowl LX can serve as a rare moment of unity, but this year’s entertainment lineup may make that a difficult goal.
Global music star Bad Bunny is set to headline the halftime show, while legendary punk band Green Day will lead the opening ceremonies. Both performers are known not only for their music, but also for outspoken political views — raising concerns about whether the Super Bowl’s massive platform could become a stage for protest.
Goodell addressed the issue during his annual Super Bowl news conference, emphasizing that the league selected Bad Bunny for his artistry and his ability to bring people together. The comments came just days after Bad Bunny criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the Grammys, fueling speculation about what messages might surface during the game.
Super Bowl LX arrives amid heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump. Recent deadly encounters involving federal agents in Minneapolis have sparked protests nationwide, placing the Department of Homeland Security and ICE under intense public pressure.
Security will be extensive. The Super Bowl is designated a SEAR-1 event — the highest federal security rating — meaning state, local and federal agencies will all be involved. Goodell confirmed that coordination with the federal government is standard procedure, adding that safety remains the league’s top priority.
Green Day’s involvement adds another layer of uncertainty. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has long used music as a vehicle for political expression. The band’s 2004 album “American Idiot” famously criticized the Bush administration, and more recently, Green Day has altered lyrics during live performances to take aim at Trump-era politics.
Goodell’s relationship with Trump has evolved over the years. Once publicly at odds over player protests during the national anthem, the two have appeared more aligned recently, including a joint announcement about the NFL Draft coming to Washington, DC in 2027. Still, Trump has criticized Bad Bunny’s selection, though he has largely avoided attacking the league itself.
With more than 100 million viewers expected to tune in, Super Bowl LX presents one of the largest live audiences in the world. Whether the night remains focused on football — or becomes another flashpoint in America’s culture wars — remains to be seen.
