Sheriff Says Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Abducted From Arizona Home, Search Intensifies

Authorities in southern Arizona are intensifying their search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, after investigators said evidence indicates she was taken from her home against her will.

Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Guthrie was last seen Saturday night near her residence in the Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson. Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators believe she did not leave voluntarily.

“We know she didn’t just walk out of there,” Nanos said during a news conference. “She did not leave on her own.”

Officials reported finding concerning evidence inside the home, prompting homicide detectives to process the scene. While authorities have not released specific details, the sheriff said they now consider it an active crime investigation.

Guthrie reportedly has mobility issues and was without critical daily medication, raising additional concern about her wellbeing. Family members contacted authorities Sunday after she failed to appear at church, leading to a 911 call and the launch of a large-scale search effort.

Local law enforcement is being assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with agents helping analyze cell tower data and canvass nearby homes and businesses for surveillance footage. Search teams, dogs, helicopters and volunteers have also been deployed.

Investigators said Guthrie’s cell phone has been recovered, and a public tip line has been established. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Savannah Guthrie shared a statement through the Today show thanking the public for prayers and support, saying her family’s focus remains on her mother’s safe return. She later posted on Instagram asking supporters to continue praying and ended her message with a simple plea: “Bring her home.”

Authorities emphasized that there is currently no known threat to the public but stressed that time is critical.
