Tucumcari Celebrates Route 66 Legacy With Vibrant New Murals Across Town
The town of Tucumcari is bringing new life to the historic U.S. Route 66 through a growing collection of vibrant murals that celebrate the area’s deep connection to the iconic Mother Road.
Colorful artwork now stretches across buildings, alleys, and storefronts, transforming Tucumcari into a must-stop destination for travelers and locals alike. Community leaders say the murals are helping preserve the town’s history while creating fresh energy downtown.
Kristine Olsen with the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce says new murals seem to appear almost weekly, highlighting the community’s strong commitment to public art. She adds that the artwork has become a major draw for visitors exploring Route 66.
The latest mural honors the highway’s centennial, capturing the spirit of classic Route 66 travel through Tucumcari. Local mother-daughter artists Franchesca Velasquez and Jazmine Jimenez have been painting murals together for five years, and this newest project marks their 10th piece.
Velasquez says the goal is to recreate the nostalgic feel of Tucumcari’s downtown from decades past, while Jimenez hopes their work helps “light it back up,” encouraging growth and creativity throughout the community.
Town leaders expect even more public art to emerge during this milestone year, inviting residents and visitors alike to take part in Tucumcari’s evolving story. The murals serve as a reminder that some of the best Route 66 experiences aren’t just found on the road — they’re painted on the walls beside it.
