US Olympic Groups Rename Milan Hospitality Space to “Winter House” After Anti-ICE Protests

Three U.S. Olympic organizations — US Figure Skating, USA Hockey, and US Speedskating — have changed the name of their shared athlete hospitality space at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics from “Ice House” to “Winter House.”

The decision comes after widespread anti-ICE protests in both Italy and the United States, sparked by growing backlash over Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and recent fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

The three organizations had partnered to create the hospitality venue as a private gathering place for Olympians, their families, and invited guests during the Games. In a joint statement, the groups said the new name better reflects their original vision of providing a welcoming, distraction-free environment connected to the season and the Olympic experience.

Protests intensified after U.S. officials announced that ICE agents would assist with American security operations during the Games in Milan. While officials described the move as standard procedure, it prompted demonstrations overseas as well as petitions and criticism from current and former lawmakers.

American figure skater and medal contender Amber Glenn supported the change, telling reporters it was a thoughtful step.

She said it was unfortunate that the word “ice” had taken on negative connotations due to current events, adding that even a small change like a name can help make people feel more comfortable.

The Winter House will host medal celebrations, watch parties, sponsored events, and athlete meet-and-greets throughout the Games. Although it is not open to the public, coverage of the space is expected to appear in broadcasts by NBC, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at athlete life during the Olympics.
