Drake Maye’s breakout second season fuels Patriots’ playoff push
Drake Maye’s second season in the NFL has marked a dramatic turnaround for both the young quarterback and the New England Patriots.
After a challenging rookie year that ended with a 4–13 record, Maye has helped lead the Patriots to a 14–3 season, throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns while emerging as one of the league’s rising stars.
But teammates say it’s not just his stats that stand out — it’s his leadership.
Running back TreVeyon Henderson pointed to a moment in a December game against Buffalo when Maye sprinted downfield to throw a block for him on a long touchdown run, calling it a clear example of Maye’s commitment to the team.
Veteran running back Rhamondre Stevenson said Maye has become more vocal and demanding in the best way, holding teammates accountable and setting expectations both on and off the field.
Wide receiver DeMario Douglas added that Maye brought the offense together before the season, helping build chemistry among receivers, tight ends and running backs — something players credit for their success this year.
Maye says his growth has come from learning the responsibilities that come with being an NFL quarterback and understanding how to navigate the highs and lows of a long season. He also emphasized staying grounded, focusing on faith, family and football.
While comparisons to past Patriots greats are inevitable, head coach Mike Vrabel says Maye doesn’t need to be anyone else — praising his development and expressing excitement for what lies ahead.
Now on the brink of another Super Bowl appearance, Maye’s teammates say they’re ready to do whatever it takes for their quarterback, whose second-year leap has transformed New England’s season.
