House Passes Funding Bill, Ending Brief Government Shutdown

The House passed a sweeping funding package Tuesday night, ending a brief government shutdown hours after it began. President Trump quickly signed the bill into law.

The legislation passed by a narrow 217-214 vote. It provides full-year funding for most of the federal government through the end of September, while the Department of Homeland Security receives only a two-week extension.

That short-term DHS funding sets up another fight almost immediately. Democrats are demanding reforms to rein in Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, making a bipartisan deal on longer-term DHS funding a significant challenge in the weeks ahead.
