Murder Suspect in Fatal Hit-and-Run of La Quinta Student Appears in Court

We’re following a developing story this morning as the man accused of murder in a deadly hit-and-run that killed a La Quinta High School student appeared back in court.

Jose Villegas Orbe is facing charges in connection with the October crash that claimed the life of 14-year-old Liam Cantu, a freshman at La Quinta High School. The incident happened last year when investigators say Villegas Orbe was involved in a hit-and-run that fatally struck the teen.

A settlement conference was scheduled today at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. Our reporter Brett Rosen was at the courthouse and says the courtroom was filled with emotion as Liam’s parents attended the hearing.

Rosen noted that as Villegas Orbe entered the courtroom, both of Liam’s parents were in tears. The hearing was later recessed, and court proceedings are expected to resume.

According to investigators, Villegas Orbe is accused of fleeing the scene after the crash. At the time, he was reportedly facing additional charges stemming from the incident.

Details surrounding a possible plea agreement or settlement remain unclear at this time. Officials have not yet released information on what may come next in the case.

NBC Palm Springs will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
