Sheriff Investigates Possible Ransom Notes in Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother

Investigators in Arizona are examining possible ransom notes and medical device data as they continue searching for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says it is reviewing three alleged ransom notes sent to media outlets demanding millions of dollars in bitcoin for Guthrie’s safe return. Officials have not confirmed the authenticity of the notes but say they are treating them as potential evidence.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said detectives are also analyzing data from Guthrie’s pacemaker, which last transmitted a signal to her iPhone around 2 a.m. Sunday. Authorities say the phone was later found inside her Tucson-area home, helping investigators narrow the timeline of her disappearance.

Law enforcement believes Guthrie was taken against her will. Blood was discovered inside her residence, along with signs of forced entry. DNA samples have been collected, though no suspects have been identified.

Guthrie was last seen Saturday night after family members dropped her off at home following dinner. She failed to appear at church the next morning, prompting concern from friends and relatives.

Officials stress that Guthrie has limited mobility and requires daily medication that is critical to her health, making the search especially urgent.

The sheriff’s department is also reviewing nearby incidents, including a possible trespassing report from early January, while urging the public not to spread unverified information. Investigators say they are coordinating closely with the FBI and following every lead.

Savannah Guthrie traveled to Tucson to be with her family as the search continues. NBC News has encouraged anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department tip line at 520-351-4900.
