Washington Post Announces Mass Layoffs, Plans to Gut Sports Section

The Washington Post is moving forward with sweeping layoffs that will reshape several of its newsroom operations.
On Wednesday, employees were told to stay home and join a video call where leadership announced what it described as "significant actions across the company." According to sources, the changes include shutting down nearly the entire sports section, canceling the Daily Post Reports podcast, restructuring the metro desk, and scaling back international coverage.
The cuts had been anticipated for weeks. Earlier signals of financial strain emerged when leadership initially decided not to send reporters to the Winter Olympics before reversing course.
The announcement caps a turbulent year under owner Jeff Bezos. Changes to the opinion section prompted its editor to resign, and the paper saw a wave of subscription cancellations after a planned endorsement of Kamala Harris was scrapped before the presidential election.
It's unclear how many employees will be affected or when the changes will take effect.
