Marco Rubio Steps Down as Acting Archivist While Continuing Multiple Roles in Trump Administration

Marco Rubio is officially shedding one of his many responsibilities.

After nearly a year serving as acting archivist of the United States, Rubio’s tenure in the role has ended under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, which limits how long an official can hold an acting position. The National Archives and Records Administration confirmed he is no longer performing the duties.

Before stepping away, Rubio delegated archivist responsibilities to James Byron, who continues serving as senior adviser and is now handling day-to-day operations while the administration searches for a permanent archivist.

Rubio remains one of the busiest figures in President Donald Trump’s second term. He currently serves as secretary of state and national security adviser — making him the first official since Henry Kissinger to hold both positions at the same time. He has also played a central role in managing the transition of Venezuela’s government following the removal of Nicolás Maduro and previously helped oversee efforts to dismantle the United States Agency for International Development.

Rubio was appointed acting archivist last February after the dismissal of Colleen Shogan.

His growing list of responsibilities has become a running joke inside the administration. At a recent State Department event, Vice President JD Vance joked that Rubio holds “five jobs,” prompting laughter from the audience. Other cabinet members have also teased Rubio about taking on even more duties.

Byron, who now performs the archivist’s functions, was selected by Trump earlier this year to help manage the National Archives while a full-time replacement is considered.

Despite stepping away from the archivist role, Rubio continues to wield significant influence across foreign policy and national security — remaining one of the administration’s most visible multitaskers.
