New Jersey House Special Election Emerges as Early Test for Democrats Ahead of Midterms

A special election in New Jersey is becoming an early measuring stick for how Democrats plan to approach the fight to retake the U.S. House.

The crowded primary centers on replacing former Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who recently became governor, opening up the reliably Democratic 11th District. The race has drawn a wide field that includes local officials, activists, a former paratrooper, and experienced political leaders — all offering different visions for energizing voters.

Four candidates have emerged as perceived front-runners: Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, former Congressman Tom Malinowski, progressive organizer Analilia Mejia, and former lieutenant governor Tahesha Way.

At the heart of the contest is a broader debate inside the Democratic Party: how forcefully to oppose President Donald Trump while also reconnecting with voters concerned about cost-of-living issues. In this district, many candidates have leaned into a more confrontational tone, criticizing immigration enforcement and calling for stronger resistance to policies coming out of Washington.

Mejia has positioned herself firmly in the progressive lane, earning endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has argued that Democratic leadership has not gone far enough in pushing back against the administration, though she trails other contenders in fundraising.

Malinowski, who previously served in Congress, says his experience gives him an advantage, pointing to his ability to be effective immediately if elected. But his past has also become a focal point, with opponents and outside groups highlighting his failure to properly disclose stock trades while in office — an issue that surfaced during his 2022 reelection loss.

Gill has emphasized his local roots and party organizing experience, while Way has highlighted her record fighting efforts to access voter data and what she calls unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices.

The winner of Thursday’s primary will be heavily favored in the April general election and is expected to have a strong edge heading into the June primary for a full term starting next year.

Democratic strategists say turnout will likely decide the race, making it a key indicator of which message resonates most with voters — and potentially offering a preview of the themes Democrats will carry into the national midterm battle.
