France and Canada Open New Consulates in Greenland as Tensions Rise Over Trump’s Territorial Threats
France and Canada officially opened new consulates in Greenland’s capital city of Nuuk on Friday, underscoring support for Denmark amid renewed pressure from Donald Trump to acquire the Arctic territory.
French Consul General Jean-Noël Poirier said the move was meant as a gesture of friendship and solidarity toward Greenland and Denmark, rather than a direct message to Washington. France’s ambassador to Denmark added that the new consulate represents tangible cooperation between European allies.
Canada also marked the occasion with a flag-raising ceremony, attended by Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Governor General Mary Simon. Canadian officials emphasized the deep Arctic ties between Canada and Greenland, noting that the two share the world’s longest maritime border.
Canada first announced plans for a Greenland consulate in late 2024 as part of its Arctic foreign policy. France followed with its own announcement last year, citing growing strategic and diplomatic interest in the region.
The openings come after weeks of strained relations between the United States and Europe following Trump’s renewed push to annex Greenland, a vast autonomous territory governed by Denmark and a member of NATO. European leaders have warned that such rhetoric threatens Western unity and could destabilize the military alliance.
Trump’s comments prompted several European nations to increase troop deployments to Greenland for joint military exercises with Denmark. While the president later backed away from proposed tariffs after reaching a framework agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, tensions surrounding Greenland’s future remain high.
Officials in France and Canada say their expanded diplomatic presence is aimed at strengthening partnerships across the Arctic and reinforcing long-standing alliances during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.
