Luigi Mangione State Murder Trial Scheduled for June as Federal Case Looms
Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial is now scheduled to begin June 8, following a ruling Friday by a New York judge that accelerates the legal timeline in the high-profile case.
Mangione, 27, faces both state and federal charges in connection with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk. He has pleaded not guilty.
Judge Gregory Carro moved the state case forward after federal prosecutors set Mangione’s federal trial for September, prompting concerns that the state case could be jeopardized if it went second. Prosecutors argued they had previously reached an agreement allowing the state to proceed first.
The ruling sparked a tense courtroom exchange, with Mangione protesting as he was led away in handcuffs, citing concerns about being tried twice for the same crime. His defense team argued they would not be ready for trial in just four months and said Mangione is caught in a tug-of-war between state and federal prosecutors.
The case has drawn national attention, in part due to widespread public frustration with the U.S. healthcare system and visible support for Mangione from some social media users and courthouse observers.
The shooting occurred outside a hotel where Thompson was preparing to attend an investors conference. Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a multi-state manhunt.
Judge Carro noted that the case has become less complex after key charges were dismissed at the state level and the death penalty was removed from the federal case. However, questions remain about whether evidence found in Mangione’s backpack will be admissible at trial.
If the federal trial is delayed, the state trial could be pushed back to September. For now, June remains the target start date.
