Alcatraz Makes History with First-Ever Live Super Bowl Broadcast from the Iconic Island

One of the most famous islands in the world is stepping into a brand-new spotlight.

Alcatraz Island will appear on live sports television for the first time ever this Sunday, as NBC Sports broadcasts part of its Super Bowl pregame coverage directly from the historic site.

Known as a former prison, Civil War fort, and now a national park, Alcatraz has long been featured in movies and history books. But this marks its debut as a live broadcast location for a major sporting event.

Crews spent the week setting up lights, testing audio, and dialing in camera shots across the island. Although the game itself will be played nearly 50 miles away in Santa Clara, NBC Sports says the goal is to highlight more than just the stadium.

Producers explained the telecast is designed to showcase what surrounds the Super Bowl, including landmarks across San Francisco.

Pulling off the broadcast required extensive planning. With limited electricity on the island, crews transported generators and equipment by barge, making for a challenging setup in a tightly protected historical environment.

Sunday’s broadcast team will include Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, and Jack Collinsworth, who will deliver live segments from multiple parts of the island — including the recreation yard, cell blocks, and the famous water tower.

In addition to football coverage, viewers will also see stories highlighting Alcatraz’s layered past, including the 1969 occupation of the island by Indigenous activists.

Representatives from Alcatraz Cruises say the national attention is a boost for tourism, helping reinforce San Francisco’s place as a destination for major events.

Despite the broadcast, Alcatraz will remain open to visitors on Sunday — meaning some tourists may find themselves unexpectedly sharing the island with a piece of Super Bowl history.
