Lindsey Vonn in Stable Condition After Two Surgeries on Broken Left Leg Following Olympic Downhill Crash

Olympic skiing icon Lindsey Vonn is recovering in stable condition after undergoing two operations to repair a serious fracture to her left leg following a crash during the women’s downhill final at the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

The crash occurred just seconds into Vonn’s run when she clipped a gate, lost control, and tumbled down the course. The incident brought immediate silence over the venue as medical teams rushed to her aid. Vonn was later airlifted from the course while spectators applauded in a show of support for the three-time Olympic medalist.

According to information provided to Reuters, Vonn underwent surgery at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso. Her team selected the facility due to its specialized departments and experience handling complex injuries. The procedures were performed on the same leg that had already suffered a serious ACL injury just weeks earlier during a World Cup crash in Switzerland.

Despite the frightening incident, officials with U.S. Ski and Snowboard confirmed that Vonn remains in good hands and is expected to recover, though the process will take time. Fellow athletes and coaches described the moment as emotional, noting the risks inherent in alpine skiing at the highest level.

Before the crash, Vonn had acknowledged the danger of competing but remained determined to finish what she described as her final Olympic downhill. Her decision drew admiration from teammates, especially after it was revealed that one of her final messages before being transported to the hospital was to congratulate teammate Breezy Johnson, who went on to win gold for Team USA.

Vonn’s family has also spoken out, saying that while the fall was difficult to watch, she would have no regrets about competing. The incident effectively ends Vonn’s Olympic run but underscores her reputation for resilience, competitiveness, and sportsmanship throughout her career.
