Palm Springs High School Students Lead Walkout Protesting ICE Enforcement
Nearly 1,000 students across the Palm Springs Unified School District participated in a coordinated walkout to protest immigration enforcement by ICE, with the largest turnout taking place at Palm Springs High School.
About 500 students walked out at Palm Springs High, making it the most active campus during the demonstration. Students marched along sidewalks, where they were met with honks and cheers from passing drivers. The show of support left some parents visibly emotional as they watched their children take part.
Several parents said they were proud to see students standing up for what they believe in and not being afraid to speak out. One parent said watching her child participate was “amazing,” while another said she was proud her son was willing to fight for justice.
The demonstration, which had originally been planned as a larger coordinated effort, shifted as groups split up and later reconvened. Despite the changes, students remained peaceful and continued their walk throughout the area, drawing attention from the surrounding community.
The protest also caught the attention of local officials. Palm Springs Mayor Naomi Soto issued a statement supporting the students’ right to speak out, saying in part that the First Amendment right to assemble applies to young people as well. She added that she was proud and grateful to see high school students raising their voices on the issue.
Community members who observed the walkout said the students were inspiring and praised their passion and energy. Several said young people often set the tone for change and that seeing students engaged in civic action was encouraging.
NBC Palm Springs reporter Brett Rosen was on scene as the walkout unfolded and captured reactions from students, parents, and community members.
School officials did not report any major incidents related to the walkout, and students eventually returned to campus after the demonstration concluded.
