The Story Behind Benjamin Karl’s Viral Shirtless Celebration at the Winter Olympics
Benjamin Karl knew exactly how he wanted to celebrate if he won gold at the Winter Olympics. What he didn’t expect was that the moment would explode across social media.
After defending his parallel giant slalom title in Livigno, the 40-year-old Austrian snowboarder tore off his racing top, flexed his muscles, and collapsed face-first into the snow. The passionate celebration was quickly clipped and shared online, drawing millions of views and reactions from fans around the world.
While many assumed the moment was spontaneous, Karl later revealed it was a carefully planned tribute to Austrian skiing legend Hermann Maier. Karl said Maier was his childhood idol and famously celebrated victories by ripping off his shirt, an image that stayed with him for decades.
Karl explained that he had waited 25 years for the right moment to recreate the celebration. Winning Olympic gold again gave him that chance.
With the victory, Karl became a four-time Olympic medalist, adding to his gold from 2022, silver from his Olympic debut in Vancouver in 2010, and bronze from Sochi in 2014. The win also made him the oldest Olympic snowboard medalist in history and Austria’s oldest Winter Olympic medalist in any sport.
Despite the viral attention, Karl said his first Olympic gold remains the most emotionally significant. Still, the second gold allowed him to enjoy the moment more freely, describing the race as a perfect day on the mountain.
Karl credits his love of winter sports to his mother and said he was skiing before he could even speak. Snowboarding soon followed, and by age 10, he had already set his life goals on becoming a world and Olympic champion.
After briefly celebrating Sunday’s victory, Karl said he was back in bed by midnight and already focused on the remainder of the World Cup season. For him, the Olympics remain the ultimate test, with just one chance every four years to deliver on the biggest stage.
