What to Know About Major Tax Changes as the April 15 Filing Deadline Approaches
With most tax documents now in hand, the countdown is on for Americans to file their 2025 taxes before the April 15 deadline. This year’s filings come with several notable changes that could lower tax bills and boost refunds for many households.
Consumer Watch reports that changes made under the Trump administration’s “big, beautiful bill” include increases to deductions and credits that directly impact what filers owe.
One of the biggest updates is a higher standard deduction. For single filers, the deduction rises to $15,750, up from $15,000. Married couples filing jointly will see their standard deduction increase to $31,500, up from $30,000. This means more income is shielded from federal taxes.
Another major change involves the state and local tax deduction, commonly known as SALT. The cap for married couples filing jointly jumps to $40,000, up from $10,000. Tax experts say this could be especially beneficial for people living in states with higher income or property taxes. Property taxes may also be deductible, as long as the combined total stays under the new cap.
Families may also see relief through an expanded child tax credit. Parents can now receive up to $2,200 per qualifying child under the age of 17, assuming other eligibility requirements are met.
Workers who earn tips or overtime should pay close attention as well. Eligible workers can deduct up to $25,000 in tipped income. Certain service workers, including firefighters and police officers, may deduct up to $12,500 in overtime pay.
According to the IRS, the average tax refund last year was about $3,100. With the new changes, tax experts say some filers could see refunds increase by as much as $1,000 or owe less than in previous years.
Tax professionals recommend filing as early as possible to avoid last-minute stress and potential delays.
The deadline to file federal taxes is April 15.
