Lindsey Vonn Suffers Complex Leg Fracture in Olympic Downhill Crash, Will Require Multiple Surgeries

Lindsey Vonn announced Monday that she suffered a complex tibia fracture in Sunday's Olympic downhill race at the Milan Cortina Games, an injury that will require multiple surgeries to repair.

The 41-year-old crashed just 13 seconds into one of the most anticipated races of the Winter Olympics. The gold medal went to her U.S. teammate Breezy Johnson. Vonn has already undergone two operations in Italy to stabilize the fracture, according to a source familiar with her care.

The crash came 10 days after Vonn ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during a World Cup race in Switzerland. In an Instagram post, she said the prior injury was not linked to Sunday's fall.

"Unfortunately, I sustained a complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries to fix properly," Vonn wrote. "While yesterday did not end the way I had hoped, and despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets."

Vonn, the 2010 Olympic downhill champion and the second most successful female World Cup skier of all time with 84 wins, had been seeking to become the oldest Alpine skiing medalist in Games history. She won two World Cup downhills this season and finished on the podium in three others.

Despite her season being over, Vonn still leads the downhill World Cup standings by 144 points and could claim the discipline's Crystal Globe. She did not address her future plans.
