Mission Pollination Exhibit Opens at The Living Desert Zoo to Highlight Pollinator Conservation

A new immersive experience at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is giving visitors a closer look at some of nature’s smallest — and most important — workers.

Mission Pollination is an interactive exhibit designed to educate guests about pollinators and the growing challenges they face. Through larger-than-life animatronics, sound effects, and hands-on learning stations, visitors are guided through the journey of pollinators and their essential role in the ecosystem.

Zoo educators say roughly one-third of the food we eat depends on pollinators. From bees and butterflies to other surprising species, these animals help sustain crops and native plants alike. However, habitat loss and certain chemical pesticides, including neonicotinoids, are contributing to declining pollinator populations.

Inside the exhibit’s walkthrough maze, guests of all ages can learn which animals act as pollinators, what they need to survive, and how small changes at home — like planting native species and choosing neonicotinoid-free plants and seeds — can make a difference.

Throughout the park, oversized animatronic displays showcase often-overlooked creatures, using movement and sound to bring their behaviors to life. The goal, educators say, is to make the science behind pollination easy to understand while encouraging conservation efforts.

Mission Pollination runs through April 30 and is included with general zoo admission.
