Billboards Seeking Nancy Guthrie Reach Coachella Valley as Man Claims He Was Detained, Released in Case

The nationwide search for Nancy Guthrie has expanded to the Coachella Valley, with digital billboards now posted along the I-10 freeway near Palm Springs. Two additional billboards have been placed in Irwindale and Buena Park—all three locations feeding onto the I-10, which connects directly to Tucson, Arizona.

Guthrie, 84, went missing from her Tucson home more than 10 days ago. She is the mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie. Additional billboards have been set up in Texas and New Mexico as part of the search effort.

In a rapid development Wednesday morning, a man came forward claiming he was detained for questioning in the investigation. He said he lives at the Southern Arizona property that state and federal authorities searched overnight. According to the man, he delivers packages in the Tucson area and had nothing to do with Guthrie's disappearance.

"All I know is that they showed my in-law a picture of somebody wearing a mask or something and they supposedly looked like my eyes," said Carlos Palazuelos.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office confirmed earlier that someone was detained Tuesday during a traffic stop south of Tucson but would not say whether that person has been released.

The FBI recently made public doorbell camera footage showing a masked person wearing gloves and carrying a gun and backpack outside Guthrie's home the night she disappeared. The images reveal what appears to be facial hair around the person's mouth and distinctive eyebrows visible through the mask's eye holes.

FBI Director Kash Patel, who visited the Tucson command center Tuesday, confirmed investigators are looking at "persons of interest." He said the bureau worked with private sector companies to recover the footage.

"And then go into their systems and actually excavate material that people would think would normally be deleted and no one would look for," Patel said.

Authorities have not said whether the person detained for questioning is the same individual seen in the video.
