Gene Autry Wind Wall Complete After Months of Construction

The Gene Autry Wind Wall is now complete, capping a months-long construction project aimed at taming one of Palm Springs' most wind-battered stretches of road.

The approximately 590-foot-long concrete brick wall runs along North Gene Autry Trail, where blowing sand has long created hazardous driving conditions and forced frequent road closures. Standing between 12 and 14.5 feet tall, the barrier is designed to reduce windblown sand, improve visibility, and cut down on closures during desert windstorms.

The $2.195 million project was awarded by City Council in April 2025, with the majority of funding coming from Measure A, the voter-approved half-cent sales tax dedicated to local streets, roads, and regional transportation improvements.

Construction began in June after months of planning. Former Mayor Ron DeHart, who had pushed for solutions to sand accumulation on city roadways for over a decade, said at the time of construction starting that the city was "hoping for less road closures and increased driver safety."
