Palm Springs Fire Chief to Provide Update on Prescott Preserve Fire Investigation

More than a week after flames tore through Prescott Preserve, destroying wildlife habitats and scorching native vegetation, the Palm Springs Fire Department is expected to provide an update on the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado is scheduled to present a report at the Palm Springs City Council meeting, with the item placed at the top of the agenda. It will mark the first time the chief publicly shares details about what firefighters encountered when they first arrived on scene February 1st.

While the fire department continues its investigation, restoration efforts are already underway at the preserve.

The Oswit Land Trust, which manages the property, quickly mobilized volunteers and experts to minimize long-term damage. Deputy Director David Paisley said the first few days after the fire were critical.

Crews focused on removing burned debris from ponds and waterways to protect water quality and wildlife. Biologists and pond experts assessed the damage, and water testing began immediately. Officials say water quality remains a concern, but it is being monitored every two weeks. Once conditions stabilize, fish will be reintroduced, helping restore the natural food chain and draw birds back to the area.

Despite the destruction, signs of resilience are already visible. Palm trees are sprouting new green fronds, and turtles have returned to bask in the sun. Organizers say nearly 75 volunteers helped clear debris within days, reopening the preserve by the end of that first week.

Looking ahead, the Oswit Land Trust plans to increase native plant species across the land, replacing non-native landscaping with vegetation better suited to the Coachella Valley ecosystem.

Community leaders say the overwhelming volunteer response shows just how much Prescott Preserve means to residents.

NBC Palm Springs will bring you the latest details from Chief Alvarado’s report during the 6 p.m. newscast.
