Team USA Captures 5 Medals in Single Day, Closes Gap in Overall Standings

Team USA is surging at the Winter Olympics in Milan, winning five medals on Wednesday—more than any other nation on the day. The Americans now have 12 total medals, sitting just two behind the overall leader heading into Day 6 of the Games.

Jordan Stolz headlined the haul with gold in the 1000-meter speed skating event, setting an Olympic record in the process. The 21-year-old, widely considered the best speed skater in the world, is expected to compete in up to four events in Milan.

"At the end of everything, just being able to win one is huge," Stolz said. "I thought it was one of my best 1000 meters that I've skated."

On the moguls course, Liz Lemley and Jaelin Kauf delivered a 1-2 finish for the U.S., taking gold and silver. In figure skating, husband-and-wife duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates earned silver in ice dancing after posting a season-best score in the free dance. Ryan Cochran-Siegle added another silver in the Super-G with a strong run in the alpine event.

The U.S. men's hockey team opens play Thursday against Latvia. The tournament marks the return of NHL players to the Olympics for the first time since 2014.
