Bicyclist Killed in Late-Night Crash at Date Palm and Ortega

A 48-year-old Cathedral City resident died Thursday night after being hit by a car at the intersection of Date Palm Drive and Ortega Road.
Cathedral City Police responded to the crash around 10:55 p.m. Officers found the bicyclist had been struck while crossing through the intersection. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the driver was heading southbound on Date Palm Drive and entered the intersection against a red signal. At the same time, the bicyclist was traveling westbound through the crosswalk—also against a red light.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for minor facial injuries.
Traffic investigators are still looking into the exact cause of the crash. The Riverside County Coroner's Office will release the victim's identity once their investigation is complete.
