Bicyclist Killed in Late-Night Crash in Cathedral City

A 48-year-old bicyclist from Cathedral City was killed in a late-night crash Thursday at the intersection of Ortega Road and Date Palm Drive.

According to the Cathedral City Police Department, the collision happened just before 11 p.m. Investigators say the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Ortega Road and entered the crosswalk against a red light. At the same time, a vehicle traveling southbound on Date Palm Drive also proceeded through the intersection against a red signal.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
