Team USA Climbs to Top 3 in Medal Count as Athletes Push Through Injuries in Milan

Team USA added more hardware Thursday in Milan, pushing the Americans into the top three for overall medal count with 14 — just three behind host nation Italy.

The day's standout story: athletes fighting through pain to reach the podium.

Chloe Kim Takes Silver Despite Shoulder Injury

Halfpipe legend Chloe Kim put down a strong first run and flew to silver while battling a serious shoulder injury throughout the competition.

"I wasn't thinking too much about what medal I was going to win," Kim said. "It was more just about coming out here, having good practices, you know, staying in one piece. And so I'm really proud I was able to achieve that today."

Jessie Diggins Digs Deep for Bronze

In the mountains, cross-country skier Jessie Diggins showed similar grit. Still recovering from a rib injury after a crash in the skiathlon, Diggins surged to the finish line in the 10K freestyle — collapsing to the ground as she crossed to claim bronze.

"It's been one heck of a fight to get here, and all I wanted to do was just ski my heart out and just leave it all out on the course," Diggins said. "And I told myself, like, I'm going to be proud, literally, no matter what."

Men's Hockey Opens Strong

Team USA's men's hockey squad got off to a solid start in the Olympic tournament, dominating Latvia 5-1. Four different players found the back of the net, including a brother-to-brother connection when Matthew Tkachuk set up Brady Tkachuk for a goal.

"The first one, it was special," Brady Tkachuk said. "And knowing that there's many more to go and just keep building off this effort."

The team faces Denmark this weekend.

What's Next

Tonight, all eyes turn to figure skating as Ilia Malinin — nicknamed "the Quad God" — enters the men's free skate with a five-point lead. He's the clear favorite to take gold in men's singles.
