Team USA highlights, snowboard surprises and hockey wins headline action at Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics

Another busy day at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics featured standout performances, tough losses and milestone achievements across several events.

Figure skating captured much of the spotlight, with Team USA’s Ilia Malinin competing in the men’s singles event as fans closely watched the medal race unfold in Milan.

On the snowboard halfpipe, it was a challenging showing for U.S. men, who struggled to complete runs in the finals and did not reach the podium. Japan’s Yuto Totsuka claimed gold, narrowly edging Australia’s Scotty James.

In women’s halfpipe competition, Chloe Kim fell short of winning a third straight Olympic gold. The Team USA star earned silver and congratulated South Korea’s Gaon Choi, the 17-year-old gold medalist whom Kim has mentored. Kim said she had hoped to make history through her runs, but expressed pride in Choi’s victory.

Team USA found success on the ice, where Brock Nelson scored twice in the second period to help power a 5-1 win over Latvia in men’s hockey. Players say they are enjoying the Olympic experience, meeting athletes from other sports and spending time together in the athletes village. The U.S. team returns to action Saturday against Denmark.

Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo added to his remarkable career, winning gold in the men’s 10K interval start in cross-country skiing. The victory marked his third gold medal of these Games and the eighth of his Olympic career, tying the all-time Winter Games record.

Looking ahead, Team USA men’s hockey faces Denmark, and American speedskater Jordan Stolz will chase his second medal of the Games in the men’s 500.
