Valentine’s Day chocolate prices surge as global cocoa shortage drives costs higher

Chocolate lovers are facing higher prices this Valentine’s Day, as rising costs for cocoa continue to ripple through store shelves across the United States.

Consumer prices for chocolate climbed more than 14 percent compared to the same period last year, according to market data tracking thousands of products nationwide. That increase is significantly higher than recent years and reflects the lingering effects of a global cocoa shortage.

Much of the world’s cocoa supply comes from West Africa, where extreme weather and poor harvests sharply reduced production. At the same time, demand remained steady, sending cocoa prices soaring in recent years. Although cocoa costs have recently dropped from record highs, many chocolate products currently on shelves were made using more expensive ingredients purchased months earlier.

Because candy manufacturers buy cocoa in advance and work through existing inventory, price relief for consumers is expected to take time. Analysts say lower cocoa prices could begin to ease retail costs later this year, though any decline is likely to be gradual.

Some cities are seeing especially steep increases, with chocolate prices rising even faster in major metro areas. Meanwhile, overall candy and chewing gum prices are also climbing faster than general inflation.

Despite the higher prices, chocolate remains a major Valentine’s Day staple, accounting for most candy purchases during the holiday. Americans are expected to spend billions on sweets as they celebrate.
