New renderings reveal massive scale of proposed White House ballroom project
New architectural renderings are offering the clearest look yet at the proposed White House ballroom expansion, revealing a massive addition that could dramatically reshape the East Wing of the presidential complex.
The images, created by Shalom Baranes Associates, briefly appeared on the National Capital Planning Commission website before being removed without explanation. The renderings show a structure spanning roughly a city block — significantly longer than the West Wing — and positioned alongside the Treasury Building.
The overall expansion would total about 89,000 square feet, including a ballroom of roughly 22,000 square feet designed to seat about 1,000 guests. The project is intended to significantly increase the White House’s capacity for large events and formal gatherings.
Construction is already underway following demolition of the East Wing that began last fall. President Donald Trump has said the project is ahead of schedule and will be funded privately. Estimated costs are around $400 million, with major corporations among reported donors.
The project still faces legal and regulatory hurdles. A historic preservation organization has filed a legal challenge, and a federal judge previously questioned whether congressional approval is required for construction. Federal oversight bodies, including the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts, must also review and approve design plans.
Planning officials are expected to revisit the proposal at an upcoming March meeting. Meanwhile, the new renderings highlight the ambitious scale of a project that has been discussed for years and could become one of the largest structural additions ever built on White House grounds.
